Well, thank you so much. I ‘d say the first key aspect of everything I have done in my life has to do with the examples I had in my own personal family. And I think this is very important that you should keep in mind, that the main legacy, the main inheritance, the main lesson you are going to give to your children, is the example you are going to set up for them. And I had the chance to have a family which has been committed through history, in serving my country France through the military, as well as through the administration, the business, and the politics.
My father was the boss of a big multinational company. Then he chose to quit the business and become a political leader in France. He was the chairman of the senate committee for defense and foreign affairs. So I had a good understanding of what a good life should be about. And I understood from the start, that a good life should of course include concrete success, financial success. But a good life should include something more, which giving something for your country, doing something for your country, and for the people around you. And I think this example has been helpful for me all over my life, and it is the main lesson I want to give to my children.
The second thing I learned from my family and has been very inspiring for me is discipline. Since I was a kid, I have seen my father every morning, 6 o’clock in the morning, listening to all different kinds of radio reports around the world, in English, in Spanish, in French, in Italian, trying to get the more and the best information. Going from the Financial Times, the New York Times to European newspaper, Asian newspaper, trying to get by himself the knowledge of how the world goes, where the world is heading, what are the risks in our world. Information was key for him and having his own assessment of the situation. I have also seen my father everyday early morning, going for one hour of jogging. This is discipline. Because you can not have strong success in life, If you don’t take care of course, your spirit, but also your body. And I have done myself everyday one hour of sports, and I advise my children to do exactly the same. Because when you do sports, you get the notion and the feeling of what is needed to achieve something. Whether you talk about study, whether you talk about running a business, disciplines show your commitment to give every chance for success.
There was the third requirement, the third lesson I took from my life. I was very lucky because I was born in Africa, in Morocco. I was educated in South America. I was taught in the US, I went to school in the university in the US, as well as in Europe. I lived in Asia, in India, and I have been travelling since I was a child around the world, trying to understand how things were working around the world, and these have given me two important lessons.
The first one is humility. Never believe you know everything, never believe you have achieved something big. You can always do better, and you can always learn something from any people around you, whether is somebody highly-educated, or somebody without education. You can learn from every person you meet, you should listen his own experience, you should try to understand the background of the person. Humility is key to achieve progress. But there is a second quality which I believe very much on, which is imagination. Don’t believe people that are telling you there is only one way to do things, there is only one way or it will be a disaster. No. there is always a better way to make synthesis. To achieve something new, always believe that you can add value to the advice that has been given to you. You can add value through hard work, you can add value through adding beauty, arts in your life and rich your life. But you can add value also through imagination, in looking for different examples, that are going to give you new ideas, new trends, new information that might help you to do better. So always look for different experience, different advice, different possibilities, that might help you to do better.
